Emergency Preparedness

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IS AN ON-GOING EFFORT

Don't wait until after an emergency to prepare for an earthquake or other major disasters.

According to researchers at University of California, Irvine, California is long overdue for a major earthquake. As a result, the community is encouraged to always be prepared for a major disaster and to be self-sufficient for at least up to 5-7 days.

In the event of a large-scale earthquake, freeways and surface streets may be impassable and public services could be interrupted for days and months. Therefore, residents should be prepared with essential needs for an extended period of time, whether at work, home or on the road.

Earthquake Warning California is managed by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and is the country’s first publicly available, statewide warning system. The warning system is designed to give California residents a few moments warning to take cover before shaking occurs.

EARTHQUAKE BRACE + BOLT PROGRM (EBB)

The Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) program was developed by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES).  EBB is a grant program that provides eligible California homeowners with up to $3,000 toward a residential seismic retrofit. The purpose is to help homeowners lessen the potential for damage to their house during an earthquake by “bracing” the crawl space, when necessary, and “bolting” the foundation to the house’s frame.  Retrofitting is important as it strengthens your home’s structural integrity, making it more resistant to damage during an earthquake. EBB has helped thousands of California homeowners complete retrofits and also offers an additional Supplemental Grant to help income-eligible homeowners pay for a seismic retrofit.
