Community Academy

The City of Rosemead and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Temple Station, are hosting a Community Academy. Community members will have the opportunity to learn more about their local law enforcement agency.  This Academy is a 7-week program, with classes taking place each Wednesday, from April 3 through May 8, 2024.  The final session will be a graduation ceremony on May 22, 2024.

The topics for the academy include a presentation by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, an overview of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department with an emphasis on patrol/sheriff traffic procedures, a patrol ride-a-long, drug and fentanyl awareness, and Homeless Outreach awareness by the Los Angeles Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse.  Participants will have the opportunity to tour Temple Sheriff's Station and Twin Towers Custody Facility.

In addition, participants will get a chance to learn about the City of Rosemead's governmental functions.  There will be a different topic presented each week and those who attend will have a deeper understanding and respect for the topics presented. The sessions will be interactive, informative, and led by experienced professionals in the field.

The Community Academy is an example of Temple Station's continued efforts to improve its relationship with the community and to educate community members on law enforcement matters and procedures.

Goals

One of the goals of the Community Academy is to help residents better understand the day-to-day operation of the Sheriff's Department. In addition, all graduates of the Academy will get to know more about the men and women who are protecting their community and why they make the decisions they do while performing that duty.

Benefits

When residents take a more personal look into their community, and the protection of their community and neighborhoods, they will enjoy a safer and closer relationship with their neighbors.

In addition, graduates will be encouraged to join the Neighborhood Watch Program and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). This will give them the opportunity to continue to be proactive in their neighborhood and to keep the community safer.

Why?

Community involvement plays an important and vital role in reducing crime in any community. Therefore, the Temple Sheriff's Station instituted the Community Academy to improve the communication and obtain the citizen input and support throughout the city. It is our hope that the graduates will become partners with us in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues that are affecting our community. Graduates will take their knowledge to their neighborhoods where they can use it to enhance the quality of neighborhood life.

The objective of this course is not to make the graduates police officers, but better-informed citizens with a greater general knowledge of the many functions within the Sheriff's Department and City's Department. Our goal is to foster enhanced community relations from these graduates and the people they touch in everyday life.

Cost

There is no cost. This is a free program offered to you by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Temple Station) and the City of Rosemead.
