Earthquake Preparedness Reminder
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred at 2:34 AM local time this morning, near Ferndale, a small community about 210 miles northwest of San Franciso and close to the Pacific coast. The City of Rosemead encourages our residents and businesses to be prepared for a natural disaster by evaluating your emergency evacuation plan and take inventory of your emergency kits and supplies.
There may be a delay in emergency services in the event of a large-scale earthquake; freeways and streets may be impassable, and public services and utilities may be interrupted for days, weeks, or months. Therefore, residents should prepare to meet their own essential daily needs for an extended period at work, at home, or on the road.
Below are essential suggestions to include in your emergency kits:
- Water (one gallon per person and pet per day for at least 5 to 10 days);
- Food (for a minimum of 5 to 10 days—don’t forget pet food);
- First aid kit;
- Flashlight(s) and extra batteries;
- Radio and extra batteries;
- Medications (prescription and non-prescription);
- Cash and important documents (birth certificates, tax returns, deeds, titles, and insurance papers);
- Clothing and sturdy shoes;
- Tools (hammer, wrench, pliers, duct tape, sturdy gloves, whistle, etc.);
- Sanitation and hygiene supplies;
- Fire extinguisher;
- Large heavy-duty trash bags; and
- Emergency plan/Emergency contact information.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) encourages Californians to sign up for “Earthquake Warning California,” to help prepare for an emergency. Earthquake Warning California is the nation’s first publicly available earthquake warning system that uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes before we can feel them, which may give California residents crucial seconds to take cover and notify those close by to take protective actions in advance of an earthquake. To receive earthquake warnings, individuals and family members can download the MyShake App and ensure phone settings are adjusted to receive emergency alerts.
