Great ShakeOut

THE “GREAT SHAKEOUT” IS ON: OCTOBER 17, 2019 at 10:17 A.M.
ARE YOU PREPARED?

Residents are asked to review their emergency plans and to join millions of other Southern Californians in the statewide “Great ShakeOut” on October 17, 2019 at 10:17 a.m. The earthquake drill will help residents evaluate their emergency preparedness and practice how to be safe during earthquakes. The drill asks residents to practice dropping to the ground or taking cover under a table or desk in preparation for when the big one hits.

Here are the instructions.

1. IT’S VERY SIMPLE:

Drop Cover Hold

Why should you Drop? Because in a major earthquake, if you don't drop to the floor on your own, the force of the energy will knock you off your feet.

Why should you Cover? Because objects in your home or office will probably be flying all over the place.

Why should you Hold On? Because the table or desk you're under will probably begin sliding, and you'll need to slide with it. Hold on for 60 seconds.

To participate or learn more about the Great ShakeOut, go to www.ShakeOut.org. While there, pledge your family, school, business, or organization’s participation in the drill. Registered participants will receive information on how to plan their drill, encourage others to participate, and to improve their earthquake preparedness. Get registered! Participation is free and everyone is encouraged to be involved.

All residents should have emergency supplies, including “Go Kits,” and evacuation plans to help their family and pets survive the first few days following a major disaster. Emergency management officials urge residents to sign up for emergency alerts, such as Alert LA County, at www.lacounty.gov/emergency/alert-la, and Nixle alerts, at www.nixle.com, for the latest emergency information.
