“Earthquake Warning California” Campaign
April is Earthquake Preparedness Month, and we want to encourage residents to prepare for a natural disaster. Please do not wait until after an emergency to prepare for an earthquake or other major disasters. Take this opportunity to assess your family disaster plan and emergency kits.
In the event of a large-scale earthquake, emergency services will likely be overwhelmed, freeways and surface streets may be inaccessible, and public services and utilities may be interrupted for an unknown amount of time. Therefore, residents should be prepared to meet their own essential needs for an extended period at work, home, or on the road.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) promotes a new public education campaign, “Earthquake Warning California,” to help prepare Californians for an emergency. Earthquake Warning California is the nation’s first publicly available earthquake warning system that uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes before we can feel them, which may give California residents crucial seconds to take cover and notify those close by to take protective actions in advance of an earthquake. To receive earthquake warnings, individuals and family members can download the MyShake App and ensure phone settings are adjusted to receive emergency alerts.
