Coyote Information

In surrounding communities, there have been reports of coyote sightings. There is always a potential for negative consequences when dealing with predatory animals in an urban environment and coyotes can be found in all areas of Los Angeles County.

Coyotes are very comfortable living alongside human beings; they have little fear of people and are often seen in residential areas. If you encounter a coyote, make loud noises and throw rocks or spray them with a garden hose. It is essential that coyotes retain their natural wariness of humans.

Coyotes will display defensive behaviors if threatened so it is important to keep your distance. Small animals should not be kept outside, even in a fenced yard, as coyotes can grab them from fenced areas in a matter of moments.

Protective steps YOU can take:

  • Keep your yards clear of clutter, large weeds or thick brush.
  • Fully enclose your pet in a cage if left outdoors.
  • Eliminate food and water sources. Feed your pets indoors.
  • Keep small animals indoors or in the presence of an adult.
  • Store trash in covered heavy duty containers.
  • Enclose the bottoms of porches and decks around your home.

The City of Rosemead is working with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) Neighborhood Coyote Program to monitor, track, and respond to coyote inquires and concerns. The Neighborhood Coyote Program is a regiobal approach aimed to address, educate, and repot safety issues caused by coyote within the San Gabriel Valley.  The City of Rosemead has joined this regional effort among nime other surrounding cities, to ensure our residents are educated and encourage to mitigate coyote behaviors.

This regional effort stems from the collaborative work of the SGVCOG Coyote Mangement Task Force, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the County of Los Angeles, the University of California, and other external stakeholders.  All residents are encouraged to report coyote activity  to the Neighborhood Coyote Hotline (626) 278-8039.  For more information and upcoming community events visit: https://www.sgvcog.org/coyotes.
