The City of Rosemead to host Amateur HAM Radio Class and Examination

The City of Rosemead Public Safety Department is partnering with the Los Angeles County Disaster Communications Services (DCS) for an Amateur Ham Radio class to prepare participants for the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) examination for a Technician Class Amateur Radio License.

Licensed Amateur Radio (“Ham)” Operators often assist with communications during disasters by providing emergency personnel with critical information as they are able to transmit messages without the use of phones or the internet.

The public is invited to take the 2-day course and examination on Friday, November 3, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, November 4, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Public Safety Center, 8301 Garvey Avenue.  The cost is $10 (pre-paid) for the class and $15 exam fee. Participants are encouraged to buy and read the textbook before the start of the class.  The required text, Gordon West W5YI Technical Manual (edition valid to June 30, 2026), is available at www.hamradio.com or www.w5yi.org.  The class registration deadline is November 1, 2023.

For further information, please contact, Keith Prebble, Los Angeles County DCS Member and City of Rosemead Emergency Communication Team (CoRECT) Member, at [email protected] or Mandy Wong, Public Safety Supervisor, at [email protected].
