Peacock Sightings in the City of Rosemead

The City of Rosemead is aware of recent peacock sightings in various neighborhoods.  While these birds can be beautiful and fascinating to observe, we ask all residents to refrain from feeding, approaching, or attempting to interact with them.

It is important not to feed peacocks as they have specific dietary needs and can lead to health risks due to inappropriate diets.  Regular feeding encourages more peacocks to settle in residential areas, leading to overcrowding and increased noise, mess, and disruption.

Feeding peacocks, though well-intentional, can cause more harm than good to both the birds and to the community. It can contribute to number of issues including:

  1. Car Damage: Peacocks are territorial and may attack their own reflections in car mirrors or shiny surfaces, scratching paint or breaking side mirrors.
  2. Roof and Gutter Damage: Their sharp claws and heavy bodies can damage roof tiles, shingles, and gutters as they walk or roost.
  3. Garden Destruction: Peacocks love to dig and peck, which can ruin flower beds, vegetable gardens, and landscaping.
  4. Droppings: Their droppings can stain driveways, patios, cars and rooftops. Large numbers make this especially unpleasant and unhygienic.
  5. Noise Disturbance: Loud and disruptive calls, particularly during early mornings, disrupts peace and become a serious nuisance.

Things residents can do to protect wildlife and to keep our neighborhoods peaceful:

  • Observe the peacocks from a safe distance.
  • Keep trash cans tightly sealed and remove outdoor food sources.
  • Educate children and neighbors about the importance of not feeding wildlife.
  • Report unusual or aggressive behavior to Rosemead’s Animal Control at (626) 569-2292.

The Rosemead Public Safety Department, Animal Control, is working closely with wildlife experts to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of both the birds and the community. Please reach out to the Rosemead Public Safety Center at (626) 569-2292 and/or email to [email protected] for any questions or concerns.
